NAPLES, FL., -- July 13, 2017 – Bone Hook Brewing Co. was awarded a silver medal at the U.S. Open Beer Competition held in in Oxford, Ohio. Winners in several categories were announced on July 10. Bone Hook’s Citra Pale Ale earned the silver medal in the Near Gluten Free category. The Citra Pale Ale is described as a 5.75% ABV, 53 IBU, 3 SRM beer brewed with German Pilsner and Munich malts, and Citra hops added throughout the boil. It is fermented with fruity, low flocculating yeast, dry hopped to 2 lb. per BBL with Citra, and left unfiltered to let the hops interact with the yeast flavors. Bone Hook added a specific protein-degrading enzyme to the fermentation, which breaks down the compounds that make up gluten.
“We are honored that our Citra Pale Ale earned such a prestigious award,” states Bone Hook brewmaster Josh Deitner. “The gluten-free and gluten-reduced beer segments are growing increasingly more popular and we wanted to appeal to those drinkers with this particular beer. We plan to brew the award winning Citra Pale Ale and have it available in our tap room again soon.”
The U.S. Open Beer Championship has been held annually since 2009, with more than 6,000 beers representing over 100 different styles competing this year. A complete list of winners can be found online at US Open Beer Winners List.
